The Saudi Pro League club, Al Ettifaq, announced that Steven Gerrard has been appointed as their coach, despite previously declining the position.
Last month, the former Liverpool and England midfielder stated that he would not be joining the team. However, Gerrard, aged 43, has had a change of heart and is now the latest prominent figure to join the growing league.
Gerrard achieved success with Rangers, leading them to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade in 2021. He later departed for Aston Villa but was sacked in October after only winning two of the first 12 Premier League matches.
Following Al Nassr’s signing of Cristiano Ronaldo last December, several high-profile transfers have occurred in the Saudi Arabian league. Karim Benzema, a former Real Madrid striker, joined Al Ittihad in June. Notably, N’Golo Kante, Ruben Neves, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, and Marcelo Brozovic have also made moves to the league. Al Ettifaq, located in the city of Dammam, finished in seventh place in the Saudi Pro League last season.
