Ajax confirms that Edwin van der Sar, renowned for his successful soccer career with Ajax and Manchester United, is in intensive care due to bleeding around his brain.
On Saturday, Ajax provided an update stating that Van der Sar’s condition is stable but still a cause for concern. The club shared this information on behalf of his wife, Annemarie.
Expressing gratitude for the numerous supportive messages, the Van der Sar family and Ajax released a statement acknowledging the outpouring of support. Manchester United also expressed their love and strength to Edwin through social media.
Throughout his illustrious career, the former goalkeeper achieved notable successes, including two Champions League titles, four Premier League titles with Manchester United, and four Eredivisie titles with Ajax.
Renowned as one of the world’s finest goalkeepers, the 52-year-old amassed 130 caps for the Netherlands national team. After retiring in 2011, Van der Sar transitioned to a role on Ajax’s board and eventually became the club’s chief executive in 2016.
He resigned from the position in May following Ajax’s third-place finish in the Dutch first division, which caused them to miss out on the Champions League for the first time in 14 years. Ajax has confirmed that Van der Sar will remain in intensive care for the foreseeable future.
