American adventurers Scott Lehmann and Shayna Unger, a Deaf couple, have gained attention for their YouTube channel where they share their experiences climbing the world’s tallest mountains. On May 22, Unger became the first Deaf woman to summit Mount Everest, while Lehmann became the fourth Deaf person to achieve this feat.
Their accomplishment, along with another Deaf climber from Malaysia, Muhammad Hawari Hashim, who reached the summit a few days earlier, has brought pride to the global Deaf community. Despite communication challenges posed by the Everest environment, Unger and Lehmann worked closely with their Sherpas to develop visual cues and signals to facilitate communication. Their goal now is to become the first Deaf climbers to conquer the Seven Summits.
