Rafael Nadal, a two-time Australian Open champion, is poised to make a comeback after a nearly year-long hiatus due to injury.
The 37-year-old Spaniard, who suffered a hip flexor injury at the previous Australian Open, has confirmed his return at the upcoming Brisbane International in January.
In contrast, Australian player Nick Kyrgios appears likely to miss the tournament in January. The 28-year-old, a Wimbledon finalist in 2022, has faced a challenging 2023 with multiple injuries, including issues with his wrist, knee, and foot. Kyrgios expressed uncertainties about his readiness for the first major of the year, although he could potentially still be considered for a wildcard entry.
Defending champion and world number one Novak Djokovic is set to return, aiming for his 11th men’s Australian Open title and a 25th Grand Slam overall. Nadal, Djokovic’s long-time rival and a 22-time Grand Slam winner, previously hinted that 2024 might be his last year on the tour.
On the women’s side, world number one Iga Swiatek and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka are confirmed participants, renewing their rivalry. Former champions Naomi Osaka, Caroline Wozniacki, and Angelique Kerber will also make a return to Melbourne Park after taking time away from the tour to have children.
Several British players, including Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie, Jack Draper, Katie Boulter, and Jodie Burrage, have received direct entries. The Australian Open is scheduled to begin on January 14, with the men’s singles final concluding on January 28.
