No immediate casualties were reported, and the agency, on X (formerly Twitter), stated it did not anticipate damage but cautioned about potential aftershocks. The earthquake, with a depth of 79 kilometers, was recorded offshore at magnitude 5.9, with its epicenter approximately 130 km from the capital region. Images on X showed government workers leaving key buildings, and students evacuated universities. Train operations in the capital were halted by the transportation ministry. The state airport operator reported no damage to runway, taxiway pavements, and terminal facilities. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre initially recorded the quake at magnitude 6.2 before revising it to 6.0. The Philippines, situated on the “Ring of Fire,” experiences frequent seismic activity. Over the weekend, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in the southern Philippines claimed three lives, followed by over 2,000 aftershocks. Additionally, a separate magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Mindanao on Monday morning.
